Carton House Tucked into the storybook setting of Carton House are two of Ireland’s most acclaimed golf courses, home to The 2004 and 2005 AIB Irish Amateur Open Championship and The 2005 and 2006 Nissan Irish Open. The award winning Montgomerie course presents the golfer with a very different challenge of head high pot bunkers, fast running greens and narrow fairways weaving through fields of native fescue grasses. The O’Meara parkland course tests its players by utilising the rolling land of the estate and the majestic waters of the River Rye. Very different in nature, both courses abound with a style and class consistent with the Carton estate. Host venue for the Nissan Irish Open in 2005 & 2006, the Montgomerie Course at Carton was awarded ‘Best New Golf Course Design 2004’ by Golf World magazine. In the words of its famous designer ‘It is a course where the best players will always come out on top’ Winding its way through the ancient specimen trees and wrapped around the River Rye, the O’Meara Course presents a more genteel but nonetheless challenging test, which beautifully complements its more illustrious sister. Together they are a potent force – very different in nature but both abounding with class which is the overriding feel of the whole resort.
Note: Carton House was built by the 19th Earl of Kildare, who chose this spectacular location for the Fitzgerald family’s country seat. It was built in 1739 and designed by the famed architect Richard Castles.
